Topstep Review | Rules, Payouts and Bot Policy for 2026
This Topstep review covers the Chicago futures prop firm that charges a monthly subscription for its Trading Combine evaluation, then pays a 90/10 split on an Express Funded Account and calls its best traders up to a Live Funded Account. Topstep allows automated strategies "with conditions," but it bans VPS, VPN and remote servers for order flow and will not troubleshoot your code. Standard Combine pricing is $49, $99 and $199 a month for the $50K, $100K and $150K accounts, plus a $149 activation fee when you pass. The rule that ends most attempts is the Maximum Loss Limit, which trails your end-of-day high and is enforced in real time on open losses.
Key insights
- Pricing has two paths. Standard: $49, $99 or $199 a month plus $149 per Express Funded Account. No Activation Fee: $95, $149 or $229 a month and nothing due when you pass.
- The Combine needs at least two days. Your best day must stay at or below 55% of your profit target, so a $50K trader should keep any single day under $1,650.
- Payouts start at $125. The Standard path needs five winning days of $150 or more; the Consistency path needs three trading days with no day above 40% of net profit.
- Automation is allowed, with limits. TopstepX API access costs $29 a month ($14.50 with Topstep's code), and orders must come from your own device, not a VPS.
- Labs changed the menu in 2026. One-time-fee static drawdown Combines now include a $25K at $75 and a $50K at $149.

Every rule and price in this Topstep review comes from Topstep's own help center and website, read in 2026. Topstep updates terms often, so treat this as a map and the official pages as the territory.

What Is Topstep and How Does It Work?
Topstep is a futures prop firm, and the short Topstep review answer is that it is a paid filter. You pay a subscription for a simulated evaluation, and if you pass its rules you trade a funded account and keep most of the profit. You never deposit trading capital, and your downside is the fees you pay.
Topstep's about page traces the company to Patak Trading Partners in 2010, with Topstep Trader launching in 2012 and the rebrand to Topstep in 2020. The homepage claims "$1.5B+ paid out to prop firm traders" and traders in "140+ countries." Those are company figures, labeled by Topstep as "Total paid all time. Individual results vary."
The path has three stages:
- Trading Combine. A simulated account with a profit target, a Maximum Loss Limit (MLL) and a 55% Consistency Target. It rebills every 30 days until you pass or cancel, with no time limit.
- Express Funded Account (XFA). Earned by passing. No subscription. You pick the Standard or Consistency payout path when you activate.
- Live Funded Account (LFA). Topstep's capital, called up by the Risk Team after consistent XFA performance. A daily loss limit is automatic here.
Who it suits
This Topstep review sorts traders into two piles before any rule talk.
- Day traders with a defined setup who know their risk per trade and can size down.
- Traders who want futures leverage without funding a personal account.
- Systematic traders willing to run automation from their own machine and test it on the free Practice Account first.
Who it doesn't suit
- Swing traders. Topstep is a day trading program. All positions must be closed by 3:10 PM CT, and trading resumes at 5:00 PM CT. No swing trading, no forex.
- VPS-based bot operators. Running automation on a VPS can get you suspended.
- Anyone who needs one big day. The 55% target pushes your profit goal higher the moment one day dominates.
A funded account is a job interview, not a lottery ticket. This Topstep review keeps coming back to that line because the rules are built around it.
What Do Topstep Rules and Pricing Look Like in 2026?
Price is the first line of any Topstep review, and the second line is that price is the smallest cost. Topstep's pricing article lists two Combine paths, and you cannot switch after purchase. Prices are base costs; VAT, GST or sales tax can be added at checkout.

| Account | Standard monthly | No Activation Fee monthly | Profit target | Max Loss Limit | Max position |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50K Combine | $49 | $95 | $3,000 | $2,000 trailing | 5 minis or 50 micros |
| $100K Combine | $99 | $149 | $6,000 | $3,000 trailing | 10 minis or 100 micros |
| $150K Combine | $199 | $229 | $9,000 | $4,500 trailing | 15 minis or 150 micros |
The Standard path adds a $149 activation fee for each XFA you earn. Resets cost the same as one month on your path. Level 1 data is included; Level 2 depth of market is $38 a month, billed on the 28th and not prorated. Full figures live on Topstep's pricing and payment page.
Which path is cheaper? If you pass a $50K on the first try, Standard costs $49 + $149 = $198 and No Activation Fee costs $95. If it takes you four months, Standard costs $196 + $149 = $345 and No Activation Fee costs $380. The break-even sits between three and four months. Topstep's own advice: No Activation Fee is best for traders confident they will pass in one or two attempts.
The rules that decide everything
If you read one block of this Topstep review, read this one.
- Maximum Loss Limit. It trails your end-of-day balance upward, never down, and locks once it reaches your starting balance. It is monitored in real time, including unrealized P&L. Touch it and the account liquidates immediately.
- Consistency Target: 55%. Your best day must stay at or below 55% of your total profit. If it goes over, your target rises to best day divided by 0.55. Topstep's example: an $1,800 best day on a $50K raises the target to $3,273.
- Daily Loss Limit. Optional in the Combine and XFA ($1,000, $2,000 or $3,000 by size if added at purchase), automatic in the LFA. Hitting it pauses you for the session but is not a rule violation.
- Flat by 3:10 PM CT. Risk managers start flattening at 3:08 PM CT. Avoid new positions after that.
How the trailing MLL bites
Topstep's own worked example: start a $50K Combine at $50,000 with the MLL at $48,000. Make $500 on day one and the MLL trails to $48,500. Lose $500 on day two and you are back at $50,000, but the MLL stays at $48,500. Your room shrank by $500 without a net loss.
The second trap is slippage. If an open trade drops your balance to $47,750, the breach has already happened, even if the market-order exit fills at $48,050. Topstep says plainly that the final balance doesn't matter; the breach happened first.
What the 2026 Labs accounts change
Topstep Labs launched one-time-fee products in 2026, and the help center now says the $25K and $50K Static Combines, the $250K Freedom Combine and the $1.5K Challenge (Powered Up) can be bought any time, up to five of each per month.
| Labs product | Price | Profit target | Max Loss Limit | Mandatory DLL | XFA payout cap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $25K Static Combine | $75 one-time | $2,000 | $1,000 static | $500 | $4,000 |
| $50K Static Combine | $149 one-time | $4,000 | $2,000 static | $1,000 | $8,000 |
| $250K Freedom Combine | $499 one-time | $15,000 | $10,000 trailing EOD | $5,000 | $25,000 |
Each has a 90-day expiration, no resets and a free funded activation. The static floor never moves, so your effective room grows as you profit. Details are on the Topstep Labs page.
Decision rule: if the trailing MLL keeps stopping you out two days before the target, buy the $75 static $25K and find out whether the rule or your position sizing was the real problem.
Does Topstep Allow Algo Trading and Bots?
Yes, with conditions, and this is where a Topstep review written for bot traders has to slow down. The Trading Combine parameters FAQ answers "Can I use automated trading strategies?" with "Yes, with conditions," and the conditions are blunt: Topstep won't help set up or troubleshoot automation, makes no exceptions for errant trades or malfunctions, and tells you to test on your Practice Account first.
The TopstepX API
Topstep's API access article says TopstepX API Access is powered by ProjectX and billed separately at $29 a month, or $14.50 with the promo code "topstep." Setup has four parts: create a ProjectX account, subscribe, link the subscription to your TopstepX profile, then generate an API key. Skip the linking step and key generation fails with "User lacks subscription."
Topstep warns that the key grants full trading access to every eligible account under your profile. Never paste it into a tool you don't trust. API orders are final, with no review, adjustment or reversal.
The VPS line
This is the rule most bot traders miss. Topstep says all trading activity must originate from your personal device, and VPS, VPNs and remote servers are prohibited. A private server is fine for historical data, research, backtesting, logging and read-only dashboards. It cannot place, modify or cancel orders, and it cannot relay orders on your behalf. Topstep's words: "your server can watch and record, but it cannot trade."
That matters for cloud tools. If you plan to route TradingView alerts through a cloud relay, read our PickMyTrade review and get Topstep's answer in writing before you connect anything.
Trade copiers
Topstep allows trade copiers. TopstepX's built-in copier mirrors a Lead account to one or more Follower accounts, but only in the Combine and XFA. Live Funded Accounts cannot use it. If the Lead hits its daily loss limit, every Follower is flattened with it.
What gets you removed
From the prohibited conduct and prohibited strategies pages:
- Exploiting SIM fills. Scalping algorithms built around unrealistic fills, hundreds of rapid trades for queue position, and tight brackets or auto-breakeven used to harvest favorable fills.
- Unfair technology. Software, AI, ultra-high-speed systems or mass data entry that gives an unfair advantage.
- Coordinated trading and cross-account hedging. Opposite positions across your own accounts, or trading in concert with others.
- Account stacking. Blowing one account aggressively, then switching to another to repeat.
- Max size into major news. Trading full position size directly into a scheduled major release.
- External or slow data feeds, and VPNs.
Possible responses range from a warning to deleting the trading day, a reset, delayed or denied payouts, or permanent closure.
For a Topstep review aimed at automation, the summary is simple: your code is welcome, your cloud server is not.
Common mistake: assuming "automation allowed" means "anything automated is allowed." Topstep treats a violation the same whether it came from your hands or your code.
Does Topstep Pay Out?
Yes. Every Topstep review gets this question first, and the payout policy answers it in numbers. Topstep's payout policy publishes thresholds, caps and transfer fees in exact numbers. The minimum payout is $125, the split is 90/10, and requests are available during CME hours from Sunday 5 PM CT to Friday 5 PM CT.

Standard path
- Five winning days of $150 or more net P&L, not necessarily consecutive. A day locks at 4:00 PM CT.
- Positive net profit since your last payout. The first payout is exempt.
- Request up to 50% of your balance, capped at $2,000, $3,000 or $5,000 for the $50K, $100K and $150K.
Consistency path
- At least three trading days with one trade each.
- Your largest day cannot exceed 40% of total net profit. A $2,000 best day needs $5,000 in total net profit.
- Request up to 50% of your balance, capped at $3,000, $4,000 or $6,000.
After any XFA payout, your MLL resets to $0 permanently. An XFA starts at a $0 balance, with the MLL at negative $2,000 on a $50K, and the MLL locks at $0 once your balance reaches $2,000.
The limited-time DLL offer
Topstep's payout policy describes a limited-time offer that began June 2: add a daily loss limit when you buy a new Trading Combine and your XFA per-request caps double. On the Standard path that means $4,000, $6,000 or $10,000; on the Consistency path $6,000, $8,000 or $12,000. Adding the DLL later, at XFA activation, does not qualify. Topstep has not published an end date, so check before you rely on it.
Live Funded Account payouts
Live payouts need five winning days of $150 or more per cycle and let you request up to 50% of your balance with no dollar cap. After 30 winning days in the LFA you gain daily payouts of as much of your available balance as you want, once per day, minimum $125.
Transfer methods and timing
| Method | Where | Speed | Topstep fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prop-to-Brokerage | U.S. only | Same day if requested by 12 PM CT | None |
| Aeropay | U.S. banks | Instant after approval | None |
| Wise | China, Canada, UK | 1 to 3 business days | None |
| ACH | U.S. banks | 1 to 3 business days | $30 |
| Wire/SWIFT | International | 5 to 10 business days | $30 |
Internal approval can add one to three business days. Topstep's example: a $500 ACH request minus $50 (the 10% split) minus $30 equals $420 received. Wise was restored for China, Canada and the UK in August 2026.
Is Topstep Legit and What Do Traders Complain About?
Topstep is a long-running business with public pricing, exact rule thresholds and a written payout policy. "Is Topstep legit" is the wrong question. The right one is whether the fee structure and pass rate make sense for your strategy.
Trust signals worth weighing
- A company history going back to 2010, with Topstep Trader launched in 2012.
- Help-center articles that name exact numbers, including worked examples of breaches and payouts.
- A clear refund policy: a 14-day satisfaction guarantee refunds up to one monthly renewal on your first-ever Combine if you haven't passed.
- Identity verification on all traders and a single-profile rule, which cuts down on account farming.
The recurring complaints
- Subscription churn. Paying $99 a month for eight months is a $792 tuition bill. The model profits when you fail, and you should price that in.
- Trailing MLL frustration. The limit rising with your end-of-day high catches traders who give back gains.
- Consistency surprises. A great day makes the Combine harder. Counterintuitive until you see the firm is screening for repeatability.
- Refund limits. No refunds on resets, activation fees, Back2Funded reactivations or Level 2 data, including accidental purchases.

Topstep review verdict on legitimacy: real firm, real payouts, real rules, and a business model where most participants fail. All three can be true at once.
Topstep vs Other Prop Firms for Bot Traders
For automated futures traders, this Topstep review puts the firm in the middle: it allows automation and an official API, but requires order flow from your own device. Here is the comparison using each firm's own pages.
| Firm | Automation | Fee model | Funded drawdown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topstep | Allowed with conditions; no VPS for orders; API $29 a month | Monthly Combine or one-time Labs | Trailing MLL that locks; static on Labs |
| Lucid Trading | Automated systems and trade copiers permitted; no HFT or microscalping | One-time fee | EOD on most plans; intraday on LucidDaily funded |
| Take Profit Trader | No bots or algos on any account | Monthly Test plus $130 PRO activation | Intraday trailing on PRO |
Our Lucid prop firm review, Take Profit Trader review and best prop firm comparison go deeper on each.
How to decide
- Choose Topstep if you trade from your desk, want an official API path and value a long operating history.
- Choose a Labs static Combine if the trailing MLL is the rule that keeps ending your attempts.
- Skip Topstep if your bot lives on a VPS. No scheduling trick changes that rule.
Tools matter less than process here. A journal shows whether one oversized day is about to raise your consistency target; our TradeZella review covers one option, and our AI day trading tools guide covers the rest of the stack.
Who Should Skip Topstep?
Skip Topstep if you swing trade, if your automation runs on a remote server, if the monthly fee would change your decisions, or if you have never traded futures with real risk.

- The swing trader. Positions must be flat by 3:10 PM CT. A multi-day breakout hold fights the product every session.
- The VPS algo operator. Topstep prohibits VPS, VPNs and remote servers for order flow.
- The trader paying rent with fee money. $99 a month feels small until month six. Fee pressure produces revenge trading, which produces breaches, which produces more fees.
- The complete beginner. Topstep publishes real education, but the Combine is a graded exam. Build a written rule set on the free Practice Account first.
- Residents of ineligible countries. Topstep's eligibility list bars citizens of countries including Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey and Ukraine, and some countries can reach an XFA but not a Live account.
Honest line: if you can't state your edge, your average risk per trade and your daily stop in one sentence, the Combine will find out before you do.
How to Get Through the Combine Without Burning Months
A Topstep review is only useful if it changes what you do on Monday. Here is the plan we would follow.
- Pick the path by your pass history. Expect to pass in one or two tries? No Activation Fee. Expect three or more? Standard.
- Set a personal profit cap. TopstepX lets you set a Personal Daily Profit Target in Risk Settings. Set it just under 55% of your target ($1,600 on a $50K) so the platform protects you from your best day.
- Add the DLL at purchase. It caps a bad day, earns the Responsible Trading discount on No Activation Fee Combines ($10, $20 or $30 off), and right now doubles XFA payout caps.
- Test automation on the Practice Account. Topstep makes no exceptions for errant trades.
- Watch your rebill date. Your dashboard must show "passed" before the rebill. If your rebill is the 5th, pass before trading ends on the 4th.
- Keep a reset budget. Decide in advance how many resets you will buy before you stop and rethink.
Before any of that, prove the strategy on data. Our free backtest reality check flags the usual overfitting tells in a few minutes.
What Does a Real Topstep Attempt Cost? A Worked Example
Most Topstep review pages stop at the sticker price. Here is the full bill for one realistic $50K attempt on the Standard path, using Topstep's own published fees.
- Month one: $49 subscription. You breach the MLL on day nine.
- Reset: $49 for a fresh account on the same path.
- Month two: the subscription rebills at $49, and that rebill also adds a reset credit to your Reset Bank.
- Month three: you pass on day six. The subscription stops, but the payment already processed for that cycle is not refunded or prorated.
- Activation: $149 for the Express Funded Account.
Total: $49 + $49 + $49 + $49 + $149 = $345 before your first payout. Add $38 a month if you trade off a DOM and buy Level 2.
Now the other side. To take a $1,000 Standard-path payout you need five winning days of $150 or more and enough balance that 50% of it covers the request, so roughly $2,000 in the XFA. At 90/10 that $1,000 request pays $900, minus $30 if you choose ACH. You would net about $870, which still leaves you down on the attempt until the second payout.
That math is not a reason to skip Topstep. It is a reason to treat this Topstep review the way you would treat any trade: know the cost basis before you size in.
Decision rule: if your budget can't cover three resets plus activation without changing how you trade, open the free Practice Account and wait.

How Many Contracts Can You Trade Inside the Topstep Drawdown Rule?
Position sizing is the variable that decides whether a trailing $2,000 Maximum Loss Limit feels workable or suffocating. Enter your account size, your stop distance in ticks and the contract you trade, and the calculator below shows how many contracts fit inside your drawdown before one bad trade ends the evaluation.
FullStack Alpha
Position sizing inside a trailing drawdown
Enter your account size, your stop in ticks and the contract you trade. This shows how many contracts fit inside the drawdown and how many losing trades it absorbs.
A trailing drawdown moves up with your account high water mark, so the room you have shrinks after a winning day and never widens after a losing one. Most accounts also cap how many contracts you may hold, and that cap often binds before the drawdown does. Check both on the firm's own page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Topstep worth it?
Our Topstep review says it is worth it for a desk-based futures day trader with a tested strategy. The Standard path costs $49 to $199 a month plus a $149 activation fee, and slow passes add up. If you are still searching for a strategy, use the free Practice Account first.
Does Topstep pay out?
Yes. Topstep's payout policy sets a $125 minimum and a 90/10 split. The Standard path needs five winning days of $150 or more; the Consistency path needs three trading days with no day above 40% of net profit. ACH and wire transfers carry a $30 fee.
Can you use a trading bot on Topstep?
Yes, with conditions. Topstep allows automated strategies and offers the TopstepX API, but it won't troubleshoot your code and makes no exceptions for errant trades. Orders must come from your own device, since VPS, VPN and remote servers are prohibited for order flow.
What is the Topstep consistency rule?
In the Trading Combine, your best day must stay at or below 55% of total profit or your profit target rises. On a $50K account, Topstep recommends keeping any day under $1,650. The Express Funded Consistency path uses a separate 40% rule for payouts.
Is Topstep legit?
Yes. Topstep traces its history to 2010, launched Topstep Trader in 2012, and publishes exact rule thresholds and payout terms. The common complaints are subscription cost and failure rate, not fraud.
What are Topstep Labs accounts?
Topstep Labs are one-time-fee products launched in 2026. They include a $25K Static Drawdown Combine at $75 and a $50K Static Combine at $149, each with a fixed loss floor, a mandatory daily loss limit and a 90-day expiration.
Our Take
Our Topstep review verdict: for supervised algo traders working from their own machine, Topstep is one of the more workable futures prop firms. Automation is permitted, the API is official, rules are published in real numbers, and the 2026 Labs static Combines finally give you a fixed floor instead of the trailing drawdown that ends most attempts.
The two lines to read before you pay are the VPS rule and the 55% Consistency Target. If your bot runs in the cloud, Topstep is the wrong firm. If your style makes money in one big day, the target will keep moving away from you. Prices, the DLL payout-cap offer and Labs availability change often, so confirm all three on Topstep's pages the day you buy.
